Hays Headquarters
Sunflower’s central hub for business and administration activities is located in Hays, Kansas. Hays is a thriving community of 25,000 and is home to Fort Hays State University.
Our headquarters building was originally constructed in 1931 and housed the St. Anthony Hospital. This 60-bed facility was used until 1972 when the hospital built a new facility on Canterbury Drive. A local businessman purchased the building, but it remained vacant for 10 years. The building was considered for use as a home for the aged, a dormitory and a high school.
During the last few months of 1982, Sunflower Electric’s Board of Trustees made the decision to purchase the structure, raze the older wing, and utilize the east wing for its headquarters. This option was chosen over that of erecting a new building, thus saving nearly $2 million. Today, all four floors of the renovated building are used for Sunflower office space.
From being used as a base for serving western Kansas’ health needs to a corporate headquarters providing power and energy for the more than 350,000 Kansans, the imposing red-brick building at 13th and Ash has a rich history of helping meet the needs of others.
